John Lyons

Trinidad Folklore Bacchanal (2024)

Caribbean-British artist and poet John Lyons has created a limited edition accompany Carnivalesque, an exhibition at the Whitworth running from 9 May – 25 August 2024. John Lyons is a painter and poet, born in 1933 in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad and Tobago.

Trinidad Folklore Bacchanal portrays the folkloric characters that are important in Lyons’ work. Characters such as La Jabless, Papa Bois, Loupgarou, Jabmolassie, and Jab Jab beckon from the crowd, while the soucouyant, as a vampiric ball of fire, hovers overhead.
