“created from a meditation upon nature’s seasonal patterns and the changing quality of light”
Carol Robertson & Trevor Sutton travel extensively together and actively seek artist residencies that take them to remote rural locations. French Paintings relates location and environment with the formal language of geometric abstraction.
In 2008 they were invited to spend a month working in Alayrac, a tiny hamlet in the Gaillac region of the Midi Pyrenees. The studio is housed in a beautiful old building, high in the hills, surrounded by fields and vineyards. The sun rises on one side of the hill and sets on the other. Days spent here became a meditation upon nature’s seasonal patterns and the changing quality of light. They have returned three times for further month-long residencies. The book is a visual record of how this environment informs their practice as non-figurative artists.
