Artist: William J. Canning

Tropical Berlin Gallery presents the debut solo exhibition of musician and artist William J. Canning. This exhibition coincides with the release of his second album, “The Heavens Laugh Along With Us”.

William J. Canning’s electronic compositions explore themes of nostalgia, spatial intrigue, and the familiarity of place. Recorded over the course of 2024 in Los Angeles, Tokyo, and Melbourne, “The Heavens Laugh Along With Us” serves as a focused distillation of his sonic world, where field recordings intertwine with angelic computerized noise and the relentless clatter of machines.

For this debut exhibition, Canning has prepared an array of mediums that reflect the album’s themes, prominently featuring a video instalation for his second single, “Worlds For Sale,” which showcases graphic poems composed of business signage captured between 2023 and 2024. 

His pieces are realized as glossy monochromatic screen prints on cold-pressed steel, along with sculptural works of fallen signage and large-format architectural prints that resonate with the environments they once depicted.

This anthropic presentation of musical performance and visual reflection creates a unique interplay between sound and image that characterizes Canning’s work.
