AT Gallery presents PURPLE moon, an exhibition featuring a series of abstract artworks by Canadian Chinese artist Charles Chau (b1963). Curated by Allison Thompson, of AT Gallery, this exhibition marks a significant extension of Chau’s acclaimed Fafa series, unveiling 40 new masterpieces of his latest Fafa 4 alongside representative works from the artist’s Fafa 123 series. The Fafa series has garnered international attention, with recent exhibitions - When do you last kiss the clouds? (Fafa 3, Tokyo, 2023), Fafa Interlude: Last Night (Fafa 2, Vancouver 2022), and Why do I paint the flower pink? (Fafa 1, Hong Kong, 2020).

As Charles Chau states: “I started Fafa in search of pureness and joy of a 5-year-old playing with colours on canvases. Obviously, the little ones have grown a bit since my first exhibition of the Fafa. So, presented here in this exhibition is a faithful record of what the child has grown up to ‘see’ — the unpredictability of ‘nature’ that also becomes an important part of the ‘nurture’ of any childhood development.”

PURPLE moon proudly presents an exquisite collection of 40 large-scale paintings from Hong Kong born artist Charles Chau's celebrated Fafa series — with majority of them being Fafa 4 works unveiled to the public for the very first time in Los Angeles. These paintings are the artists impressions of nature and the world, changing through time, sharply articulated with his versatile vocabularies of colours.

Allison Thompson, curator of the show, adds:

“PURPLE Moon, Charles’s fourth exhibition in the Fafa series, marks a thrilling milestone as my gallery's inaugural showcase in Los Angeles following our expansion from Vancouver. From the very inception of the Fafa series, we have witnessed a remarkable evolution in Charles’s artistry and style. In this exhibition, he delves into a more romantic color palette, skillfully experimenting with enchanting shades of purple and pink. The works invite viewers to reflect on the rare phenomenon of the purple moon, symbolizing transformation and wonder. Prepare to be captivated by the emotional depth and vibrant energy that each artwork brings to life!”

Charles Chau is a graduate of the University of Hong Kong in Philosophy and Art History. In 2019, the artist was commissioned to paint a mural depicting Okanagan Chinese history in downtown Kelowna, BC. The documentary, Flowers & Fruits, won the ‘10 Best’ title of China’s Roots Film Awards 2020, and was also shortlisted for the 3rd Edition, Cypress Archaeological, Ethnological, and Historical Film Festival 2020.
