Mayfair’s avant-garde destination, sketch, renowned for its eclectic art-filled interiors and innovative dining experiences, presents its annual Christmas installation, ‘A Sweet Christmas’.

Installation Views

This year’s theme celebrates the delightful confections of the festive season. From the luxurious spices of cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger to the decadent cakes and treats central to Christmas feasting, this exhibition explores the rich tapestry of cultural traditions that have made sweets synonymous with the Yuletide period. Among the many features of the exhibition, there will be a nod to the classic poem “Twas the Night Before Christmas” by Clement C. Moore, which paints a nostalgic picture with the famous lyrics, “The children were nestled all snug in their beds, while visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads…”. Adding to the enchantment, the beloved Sugar Plum Fairy from Tchaikovsky’s “The Nutcracker” will also inspire the exhibition, who embodies the the joy and fantasy intrinsic to the season.

sketch has invited a selection of talented artists, designers, and florists to transform distinct areas of the Grade-II* listed building at 9 Conduit Street into a charming display. As part of this experience, the treasured ballerinas will return on 15th November, coinciding with the launch of it’s festive menus.

Reception – Jam Jar Flowers

Jam Jar Flowers return to sketch for their 4th Christmas, adorning the reception and entrance hall of 9 Conduit Street. Drawing inspiration from the age-old tradition of ballet during the festive season and the intricate stage sets of the 19th and 20th centuries, guests are greeted with a dramatic transformation of the space. Upon entering beneath a twinkling canopy of lights and cosy draping, a graceful swan will be revealed, as if unveiling the curtains on a ballet stage.

The Lecture Room & Library – Mehbs Yaqub

Within the three Michelin-starred restaurant, Mehbs Yaqub’s crystal tree summons guests to indulge in the extraordinary. The mirrored panels of the tree reflect the festive spirit of the room, topped with a spinning crystal ball emulating the glittering stars of the winter sky. At the very heart of this creation lies a rotating window, placing A Sweet Christmas at the centre of attention, showcasing scenes from the beloved Nutcracker, hand-carved by Hungarian artist Vanda Bahdszki.

The Glade – Lucy Vail Florists

In a delightful debut for their first Christmas at sketch, Lucy Vail Florists have fashioned an installation for the Glade. Inspired by the whimsical poem “The Sugar Plum Tree” by the esteemed Eugene Field, Lucy Vail has crafted a ceiling canopy of trees adorned with pearled and sugared fruits, delicately suspended above the heads of guests, inviting them to wander into a fairyland of sweetness.

The East Bar & Pods – Ricky Paul

The East Bar & Pods shall play host to a charming installation by the ever-creative Ricky Paul Flowers, marking their eighth Christmas at sketch. A bespoke gingerbread house will grace the dome of the East Bar, while gingerbread figures dance merrily around the Pod Loos. Here, scents and sights intertwine in celebration, with A Sweet Christmas taking centre stage in the iconic restrooms.
